Purpose of the role

Teach art through purposeful, inclusive learning for BSA pupils aged 11–19. Develop creativity, observation, practical skills and confidence through structured projects and individual starting points. Support progression to further study, creative pathways, employment and independent life, working with SEND, pastoral and safeguarding colleagues.

Teaching and assessment

  • Plan coherent lessons and schemes of work aligned to the approved curriculum and awarding-body requirements; adapt teaching for pupils with SEND, SEMH and differing prior attainment.
  • Teach drawing, painting, colour, composition, printmaking, mixed media and suitable three-dimensional work within the approved curriculum. Develop sketchbook practice, visual research, experimentation and understanding of artists, designers, cultures and creative careers.
  • Set clear objectives, demonstrate techniques and assess pupils’ creative process, practical skills and finished work. Give constructive feedback, maintain progress and portfolio records, and prepare pupils for approved qualifications and exhibitions where offered.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, learning, assessment and accreditation; report concerns promptly and contribute to learner reviews and transition planning.
  • Promote literacy, numeracy, digital competence and relevant careers links through the subject; contribute to post-16 progression and employer or community links where appropriate.
  • Provide lesson cover for other subjects as required at the discretion of SLT, within the agreed working pattern and appropriate to the teacher’s competence. Use the lesson plans and resources provided, maintain attendance, behaviour and safeguarding procedures, and report any subject-specific support or safety requirements before undertaking the cover.

Safe and inclusive practice

  • Establish respectful routines and high expectations; apply BSA behaviour procedures fairly, using supportive and proportionate responses rather than informal exclusions.
  • Follow safeguarding and child protection procedures, read the current Keeping children safe in education Part One, pass concerns promptly to the designated safeguarding lead and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Work with the SENCO and pastoral team on reasonable adjustments, support plans, risk assessments, attendance barriers and pupil wellbeing; challenge discrimination and promote equality.
  • Manage a safe art room, including storage, stock, cleaning and appropriate use of tools and materials. Follow activity-specific risk assessments and COSHH controls where applicable. Supervise practical work closely and only use specialist equipment or processes for which training and safe arrangements are in place.
  • Keep professional knowledge current through training, supervision, appraisal, moderation and departmental improvement work.

Person specification

Essential

  • Secure art subject knowledge and practical skills, with a portfolio or other evidence of relevant work.
  • Ability to plan, demonstrate, teach and assess inclusive art projects for pupils aged 11–19 with differing starting points.
  • Ability to manage art materials, tools and practical activities safely.
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality, positive behaviour and working with SEND and pastoral colleagues.
  • An appropriate teaching qualification, or agreement to work towards one within three years under BSA requirements.

Desirable

  • Art, fine art, design or a related qualification.
  • QTS, QTLS, PGCE, Level 5 teaching qualification or equivalent.
  • Experience with SEND, SEMH or alternative provision.
  • Experience of relevant qualifications, portfolios and creative progression routes.

Recruitment and appointment

This role involves work with children. Appointment is subject to BSA’s safer recruitment process, including identity, right-to-work, satisfactory references, verified qualifications, appropriate enhanced DBS and children’s barred-list checks where the role is eligible, and applicable prohibition or other statutory checks. Shortlisted applicants may be subject to an online search in line with current guidance.

An application form is required; a CV alone is not sufficient. BSA welcomes applications from all backgrounds and will consider reasonable adjustments throughout recruitment and employment.

Part-time working days and weekly hours are to be agreed based on business need and confirmed in the contract, together with salary, working-year arrangements and paid leave.
